I am Sad Old Dad

I came up with my persona 10 years ago when I was training for my first ever marathon (the London Marathon). I used it to raise money for the charity I was running for. Anyway, I have kept it ever since.

So today I launched SadOld.Dad a site for those needing solutions to come to when they don't have the time or resources to build them themselves. I built it to run on donations. Yes, if you need a major project there may be a small fee, but at the end of the day I am the Robin Hood of the software world.

My day job is working with a small Software Company. That pays the bills and this site is not aimed at replacing companies like that. It is aimed at bringing back the fun in building solutions to those that need them, but can't afford them. 

There are currently 3 projects available to register and sign up and use.
  • Customer Manager - built because I also do Shipt, Target's shop and deliver service and I wanted a solution to upload my orders and record my tips.
  • Order Manager - built because I wanted to play around at building invoices with drag and drop because I needed to learn how to do that for a project at work.
  • Loan Manager - built because I wanted to learn more about compound interest

Have you ever looked at the back of a driver's license and wondered what that weird looking barcode is? Well, my strange brain is always inquisitive and the other day I was looking at mine and decided to see if I could take a photo of it and get the data from it.  The first thing to do was to work out the format of the barcode.  Welcome to the World of Geocodes Have you ever wanted to see if an address is real and if it is get the geocode for it? Geocode, what is that? Ok, let's start with defining what a geocode is and what it can be used for. The location of everything on Earth can be defined as a set of latitude and longitude (a sort of set of coordinates). So, a geocode is simply this set of latitude and longitude that represents a geographic entity. Now that we know this, what is it used for. Simple, if you want to store a location on a Google map, it is easiest to store the geocode for it. If you have the geocode you can use it to add a marker to the map or even center the map. Extracting Text from a Screenshot Using Tesseract

Tesseract -  https://github.com/charlesw/tesseract  is an open source OCR engine written for .Net. I have been using it for several months to extract text from screenshots I have taken from an app I use for my gig work. This has allowed me to easily create orders in my database and also add tips to the orders. Anyway, this blog is about how to use Tesseract, not how I've used it. So let's get started. Firstly Tesseract isn't the only OCR Engine. I like it because it is open source and works fairly well. Probably the best known is Iron OCR -  https://ironsoftware.com/csharp/ocr . IronOCR requires a  https://ironsoftware.com/csharp/ocr/licensing/ . For enterprise applications with a decent budget I would recomment Iron OCR, but for small projects where you don't have the budget you should be OK using Tesseract. So, let's dive right in.
